I believe it is important for schools to support parents in their understanding of learning, curriculum, and assessment and BSB is reaching out to the community over the next few months to provide information sessions for parents.

From September through to January a number of Primary School Learning Sessions have been planned. Our teachers believe that a child’s learning potential can only be maximized when school and home are working in partnership to facilitate the learning journey and these sessions have been planned to foster that partnership. I do hope you can join us for some of these sessions and we have scheduled them at a time when most parents can attend.

Nine sessions are planned covering diverse topics of interest for families:

A Beginner’s Guide to the International Primary Curriculum: September 23rd - This session was attended by 26 parents and feedback has been vey positive.

Effective Feedback of Assessment and the Use of Data to Improve Your Child’sLearning: Thursday, September 28th 6-7pm

Learning For Life (A new Curriculum Initiative): Monday, October 18th 6-7pm

Supporting Your Child’s Learning in Literacy: Tuesday, November 2nd 6-7pm

Supporting Your Child in the Use and Application of Maths Skills: Monday, November 15th 6-7pm

Supporting Your Child’s Learning in ICT: Monday, November 22nd 6-7pm

Science as an Everyday Part of Life: Tuesday, December 7th 6-7pm

Philosophy for Children ( P4C): Monday, January 10th 6-7pm

This week at BSB we are in a celebratory mood as it is our 10th birthday. All students and staff participated in a special assembly on Monday 13th concluding with birthday cupcakes with red, white and blue frosting and the school singing “Happy Birthday”. On Sunday 19th, the entire school community is gathering for a picnic on the sporting field. A band will be providing entertainment and we expect over 300 participants. We have over 50 new students this year and the picnic will provide another opportunity for new families to meet, interact and establish new friendships with present families. The birthday celebrations for the year will culminate with a Spring Fair planned for April/May.

Our school is one of the ”new kids on the block” in the Boston educational community and has grown from 16 students to 300 and grown from a small primary school to a Pre-K through Year 13 school – A great achievement!!

It is the first week of a new year at the British School of Boston and we have 55 new students who have joined us this year. I can sense a level of excitement and enthusiasm within the school community. This year is the school’s 10th birthday and a number of celebrations are planned including a community picnic on 19 September and a Spring Fair planned for April 2011.

Our school is one of the “new kids on the block” in Boston and it is gratifying to be part of the school’s growth and development over the past 10 years. BSB started with 16 students in Dedham and has now grown to a primary through secondary school offering an exemplary British and International style education for 300 students from ages 3 to 18. Our school has gained an impressive reputation for high quality learning outcomes for all students using a personalized approach and we benchmark our student academic achievements against international standards.

We have recruited 6 new teachers this year to further expand our learning program and a new Admissions Director and Athletics Director who will complement our existing programs.

Our examination results were impressive with 100% of students gaining A*- C passes in all the IGCSE subjects and our inaugural IB graduation class have all started college either in the USA or England.

I look forward to another year of achievement and success at our school.

As I reflect on this past year I have noted with interest the improvements in the way our school has participated in community service projects.

At the high school level, our students and staff have volunteered at Habitat for Humanity, Milton Hospital Volunteers, Cradles to Crayons, Community Servings, Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Davodaya Sri Lanka and Epiphany School.

The entire Primary school has made a commitment to community service by participating in the following projects:

Nursery – litter clean-up in Larz Anderson Park

Reception (Atlanta) - decorating pots and planting flowers at Sherill House Nursing Home

Reception (Houston) – Book drive for Children’s Hospital

Yr 1 (Belfast) - students making welcome packs for children at The Home for Little Wanderers

Yr 1 (York) – students holding a lemonade stand to make animal goody bags for the Animal Rescue League of Boston

Yr 2 - donating books for homeless children – presented to Horizons for Homeless

Yr 3 (Cambridge) – students putting together shoeboxes of items for Horizon’s wish list

Yr 3 (Cardiff) – students putting together care packages and writing letters to servicemen and women

Yr 4 – children performing a musical concert for Spring House Assisted Living and Retirement Community

Yr 5 – students putting together packages for Angell Memorial Animal Hospital

Yr 6 – students preparing share and learn fun activities for 5th grade students from Epiphany School.

In addition to the above, following the Haiti and Chile earthquakes, our student council organized fundraising projects and funds were sent to the relief efforts in both location.

These various activities instill a sense of responsibility for our students and assist in preparing them to take their place as active members of the global community. I have been impressed by the way our students have taken the initiative in organizing, operating and promoting fundraising and volunteering events.

I am excited to see our students participating in activities that change the lives of others and look forward to our school’s involvement next year.

Bruce
